ShenanArts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community theatre, founded in 1981.
Our mission is to build bridges in our community through the shared experience of live theatre.
Each year ShenanArts produces an ambitious schedule of plays and musicals by and for participants of all ages, always striving for material that appeals to the broad tastes of the community, to promote a culture of excellence and inclusion.
At the heart of ShenanArts has always been theatre education for children. In keeping with this focus, in 2009, the Presbury Theatrical Training Program (PTTP) was founded in memory of longtime, dedicated volunteer Lin Presbury. PTTP provides quality training that ignites excitement for the performing arts in aspiring young actors K-12 and encourages the continued development of creativity and imagination. This enrichment program runs in two 16-week semesters: spring and fall.
In the fall of 2009, the ShenanArts Board of Directors sought a new location that would provide the desired space for our growing theatre. That dream was realized when the auditorium at Gypsy Hill Place (formerly the old Robert E. Lee High School) became available for lease. Gypsy Hill Place, located at 300 Churchville Ave. Staunton, Virginia is a registered National Landmark that was built in 1928 and renovated in 1953.
In May of 2010, many dedicated volunteers helped us move from our previous location in Verona, VA and helped restore the current theatre space at Gypsy Hill Place in Staunton, VA. Our new home allows us on-site rehearsal space, large set and costume shops, spacious dressing rooms, upgraded technical abilities, and increased audience capacity, proving the needed space for the growth of the theatre. Our theatre seats 341 people. The stage is a traditional proscenium stage with custom-built extensions for various configurations.
ShenanArts is directed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
